Berry
sur Cher is our family home in France. It
is in the village of Meusnes, near Romorantin, in
the Loire Valley, about a mile from the Cher River.
The center of the property is the main house, a lovely
longere – a
long white stone farm house, built 1750- 1890. We purchased the house in 2000,
and have completed substantial renovations of the house,
including a modern kitchen and 3 ½ baths. There
are also several other small buildings on the property,
which is surrounded by stone walls and fences. We also lovingly
restored the beautiful gardens, and added a porch with
teak flooring between the two wings of the house. There
are many places, inside and out, to gather with friends
and family, or to spend quiet time with a good book.
The house is located in a small town (pop. 1000)
with a church, bakery, small grocery store, and post
office. Nearby Selles sur Cher (5 minutes)
is a bustling market town with restaurants and shops.
What to do....
There are forests and vineyards for walking, a small
river for fishing, and the town hosts several seasonal fetes ~
the spring brocante, the summer sardinade,
the 14 July fireworks and lantern parade, among others.
It is also a perfect area for biking. We have designed a series of loops of 2-5 hours that lead from the house on interesting tours to the north, south, east or west, past chateaux, rivers and small towns, with cafes and picnic areas along the way for breaks...and you will meet many other cyclists along the way! Rental bikes are available nearby.
There is also great local antiques shopping, including several prestigious summer antiques fairs in nearby towns such as Chambord and Cheverny.
Amenities: we can also arrange to have a chef for the week, or for the evenings of your choice, to prepare delicious meals including regional specialties, including shopping, service, etc.
Golf can be arranged at nearby Cheverny.
We can also help you arrange visits to interesting wineries (local favorites are sauvignon blancs such as Sancerre and Quincy) and cheese makers (Selles sur Cher is the fromage de chevre or goat cheese capital of France).
How to get there:
By car- rental cars are available at Paris Charles de Gaulle or other airports where you may arrive. The house is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from CDG or Paris.
By Train- The house is also easily accessible by train from Paris, either from Gare Monparnasse to Tours by TGV, then transfer to a local train to Selles sur Cher (5 minutes from the house), or from Gare Austerlitz through Vierzon to Selles sur Cher. Either route is about 2 hours, with a cost of about $75 RT. |
